How would you answer that question? For many who struggle with direction in life, this isn’t an easy question. Fortunately, the Phoenix Life Skills program is available to take you on a journey of discovering your God-given gifts and purpose in life.
The Phoenix Life Skills program offered by The Milwaukee Outreach Center is about the path of self-discovery that provides an opportunity to explore who you are and to see your potential.
Phoenix Life Skills begins with a one-week, 40-hour program. Set within a Christian framework, individuals learn about their personality and explore how ideas can have a both a positive and negative impact upon your life. This is a week where “the lights come on” and you begin to see things differently. Your outlook also changes and you come away with a sense of hope, direction and purpose.

The Phoenix Life Skills class incorporates a variety of teaching methods in pursuing the journey of change.

Measurement of Success
A successful Phoenix Life Skills graduate is someone who finds full-time, gainful, permanent and meaningful employment and becomes actively involved in a local parish or church.

Equal Energy (E2)
To the right, Equal Energy students support each other in their pursuit of permanent employment.
Equal Energy (E2) is our follow-up program to the Phoenix Life Skills class. “Equal Energy” means that for every effort a client makes, the Phoenix team will respond with an equal effort. This involves…
- graduating from the Phoenix Life Skills class
- completing assessments in reading, language arts,
and math - attending Equal Energy support group once a week
(12 weeks or until employed) - meeting with a mentor once a week
- submitting applications for employment from our
computer lab - using our Workforce Readiness Solutions program
until employed - meeting with vocational and family counselors
Each Phoenix class consists of approximately 14 students,
two faculty members, and five guest speakers.

How to be a Mentor
Right, Thomas Tym, an engineer and technology services professional, is one of the many volunteers and mentors at The Milwaukee Outreach Center. Email tmoc@tmoc.org to volunteer.
An Equal Energy mentor moves our Phoenix Life Skills students along the process of living the Christian life and finding meaningful employment.
This involves…
- attending a brief training session
- mentoring each week with a student for
1 ½ hours - monitoring the progress of your student
- exercising “tough love” principles with students
- participating in evaluation of student’s progress
Reasons for being a mentor
- someone needs your insight and wisdom to become a responsible and productive citizen
- Jesus calls His followers so others can experience His grace, forgiveness, and newness of life.
- everyone who has experienced defeat and disappointment needs someone to come along side of them and give then encouragement.
Steps for becoming a mentor
Our internship programs attract interns from colleges and universities locally and nationally.
University Internship Programs
Educational Requiremenst:
Undergraduate student in Social Work, Psychology, Behavioral Sciences or related field from a recognized college or university.
Internship includes:
- Case management for clients in our Phoenix Life Skills program
- Participate in joint counseling sessions with supervising therapist
- Conduct client intake assessments and provide proper reporting and documentation
- Assisting
Equal Energy students in developing
individual employment plans - Participate in supervision and case reviews
- Interface with other cooperating organizations
- Measure and compile statistical and achievement data
Steps for becoming an intern
- Be academically qualified.
- Complete application from sending institution.
- Be approved by your sending institution.
- Complete application from The Milwaukee Outreach Center.
- Be in agreement with the core values of The Milwaukee Outreach Center.
- Personal interview and recommendation of the Executive Director.
Length of Internship
The length of internship is defined by the sending institution. Priority, however, is given to interns who will complete two consecutive semesters with The Milwaukee Outreach Center.
Completion of Internship
Each internship is adapted to follow the guidelines of the sending institution. The intern works in cooperation with his or her department advisor and his or her supervisor at The Milwaukee Outreach Center. Completion of the internship is based upon the completion of all agreed upon requirements.
